3D scanning and reverse engineering explained

What you get back and what to bring.

Not every job starts with a file. Sometimes you have a part, a pattern, or an object and you need it as a 3D model so it can be modified, reproduced, or built into something larger. That is what 3D scanning and reverse engineering are for.

What you get back

One of three things, chosen by what happens to the part next: a cleaned mesh when you need the shape and nothing more, a workable STEP file when you will keep designing on it, or a full parametric model when the part has to be modified or made again to spec. The 3D scanning and reverse engineering page says what each one suits.

What to bring

The part, and a note on what you need to do with it afterward, since that decides which kind of model makes sense. A custom quote for scanning is free and with no obligation. Request one on the Get a Quote page and tell us the overall size and which kind of model you need. The lead time comes with the quote.
