ABS

The classic engineering plastic: impact resistant and moderately heat tolerant.

Best for

  • Glove-box and pillar trim prototypes
  • CMM inspection fixtures
  • Gear check templates

Not the right choice for

  • Outdoor parts in direct sun
  • Loaded parts that run hot
  • Contact with acetone or other strong solvents
  • Food contact

Key properties

Tensile strength25 to 42 MPa
Heat deflection87 to 106 C at 0.45 MPa, 84 to 101 C at 1.80 MPa
Water uptake0.35 to 0.65 percent in humid air

What to use instead

  • ASA when the part sees sunlight.
  • Polycarbonate (PC) when the part has to hold its shape hotter than ABS can.

The FDM material selector narrows the whole range by operating temperature, load, chemical exposure, and budget.
