Best for
- Aerospace interior brackets and ducting that must meet flame, smoke, and toxicity standards. We do not certify parts for this use.
- Lay-up tools for composite cures to 150 C, and paint-bake masks (9085 grade)
- Autoclave lay-up molds and winding mandrels, and composite repair tools (1010 grade)
- Steam-sterilizable fixtures (1010 grade). We do not certify parts for this use.
Not the right choice for
- Contact with ketones such as acetone and MEK, ethers or aromatic solvents while under load
PEI (Ultem) as a printed part
The 1010 grade takes more heat than 9085, and the two are about as strong.
Key properties
| Tensile strength | 54 MPa for 9085, 56 MPa for 1010 |
|---|---|
| Heat deflection | 158 C at 0.45 MPa for 9085; 208 C at 0.45 MPa for 1010 |
| Glass transition | about 186 to 217 C |
| Flammability | UL94 V-0 at 0.75 to 1.5 mm |
What to use instead
- Polycarbonate (PC) when the heat and flame-rating requirement is lower than Ultem's range.
- PPA (high-temp nylon) when a filled nylon covers the temperature requirement.
- PPSU (Polyphenylsulfone) when the part also needs high impact strength and repeated autoclaving. We do not certify parts for this use.
The FDM material selector narrows the whole range by operating temperature, load, chemical exposure, and budget.
