PPSU (Polyphenylsulfone)

The toughest of the sulfone plastics, and the pick when PSU is not tough enough. It holds its shape through repeated steam autoclaving. We do not certify parts for this use.

Best for

  • Repeated-autoclave medical trays and instrument housings. We do not certify parts for this use.
  • Aircraft interior parts needing both heat and impact resistance. We do not certify parts for this use.
  • Plug-in connectors and powertrain parts in contact with engine oil

Not the right choice for

  • Contact with ketones such as acetone and MEK, concentrated strong acids or aircraft hydraulic fluid
  • Loaded parts above about 160 C

Key properties

Tensile strength55 MPa
Heat deflection190 C at 0.45 MPa
Glass transitionabout 220 to 230 C
FlammabilityUL94 V-0 at 1.5 mm

What to use instead

  • PSU (Polysulfone) when the part does not take real impact and a lower heat limit will do.
  • PEI (Ultem) when flame rating and aerospace-style qualification matter more than sterilization. We do not certify parts for this use.
  • PES (Polyethersulfone) when you need more stiffness and the part will not take impact.

The FDM material selector narrows the whole range by operating temperature, load, chemical exposure, and budget.
